un progetto di ricerca tra spazio pubblico, comunità e produzione culturale.
Todo Modo e la Cattedra “Art in in space and time” presso l’Università ETH Zürich hanno
attivato un progetto di ricerca e produzione culturale incentrato sul rapporto tra gli spazi
pubblici e i luoghi di frequentazione quotidiana. L’iniziativa riunisce studenti, docenti e
ricercatori in una settimana di lavoro e sperimentazione che si svolge tra diversi luoghi
della città. La stessa è stata ideata e sviluppata con il coinvolgimento dell’artista Rosa
Barba insieme con gli artisti Monica Narula, Sam Ghantous e Susanne Sachsse (in
residenza a Villa Romana) e della cattedra “Art in space and time” presso l’Università
ETH di Zurigo. Questo progetto si iscrive in un percorso biennale costruito da Todo Modo/
Periodicō 11.11 insieme all’Istituto Europeo di Design IED Firenze e alla Stamperia Braille
Regione Toscana.
Cuore del progetto è Periodico 11.11, l’edicola rigenerata di Piazza Edison, nel quartiere
di Campo di Marte, trasformata negli ultimi anni in uno spazio culturale di prossimità. A
partire da questo spazio, gli studenti saranno coinvolti in un percorso di osservazione del
territorio, incontri e attività di progettazione che si svilupperanno tra gli spazi di Todo
Modo, IED Firenze e altre istituzioni culturali cittadine.
Il lavoro degli studenti si articolerà in due principali linee progettuali. La prima riguarda lo
sviluppo di un progetto radio, pensato come piattaforma di ascolto e narrazione del
quartiere. Attraverso interviste, registrazioni e raccolta di testimonianze, la radio sarà
concepita come uno strumento capace di dare voce al quartiere e di attivare nuove forme
di partecipazione locale.
La seconda linea di lavoro è dedicata alla stampa Risograph, con l’obiettivo di realizzare
uno strumento editoriale e visivo per il quartiere. Il progetto esplorerà la possibilità di
creare un calendario o un dispositivo di comunicazione analogico capace di raccogliere
eventi, annunci e contributi della comunità, trasformando la stampa in uno spazio di
scambio e condivisione.
Attraverso questi due output – radio e stampa – il progetto intende riflettere sul ruolo degli
spazi culturali di prossimità e sulle possibilità di attivare nuove forme di relazione tra
istituzioni educative e realtà culturali indipendenti.
Il lavoro confluirà – venerdì 20 marzo – alle ore 10.30 in una performance sonora curata
dall’artista Susanne Sachsse presso l’edicola Periodico 11.11 in Piazza Edison e alle ore
17 in un incontro pubblico, durante il quale saranno condivisi i risultati della ricerca e i
prototipi sviluppati dagli studenti – presso L’Istituto Europeo di Design IED in via Bufalini.

This Seminar Week in Florence experiments artistically with public space, its architecture, and its
performative possibilities. Prof. Dr. Rosa Barba and the Chair of Art in Space and Time will focus
on the transformation of urban objects by rethinking what a kiosk can do—not only as a place for
newspapers, but as a stage, a site, a gathering point, a sound transmitter, or even a mobile studio.
Todo Modo’s Edicola is more than a newsstand; it becomes an urban node—for reading, gathering,
performance, and community building—serving as a laboratory for imagining how small elements
of the city can shift meaning and provoke new forms of engagement.
Through an interdisciplinary approach spanning art, architecture, and performance, students
develop four intertwined prototypes and speculative proposals along two axes. One axis is
exploring how listening becomes active rather than passive by creating ways for the community to
tell their own stories—forming a network through sound. Here, students are developing both the
technologies and protocols for a community radio while investigating what broadcasting means
today: shifting from wide transmission toward smaller-scale, community-based reach.
The other axis is developing an analog neighborhood interface for announcements, events, and
seasonal information—paired with a mobile physical infrastructure that hosts and supports these
exchanges. Together, these proposals create a community node while activating the larger park
environment both materially and socially.
While in Florence, IED students will guide ETH students through the Campo di Marte
neighborhood, sharing research on the area and initiating dialogue between the two student
groups. The walk introduces the kiosk as a social node, encouraging students to observe how it
functions within the daily life of the neighborhood. Students will then reflect on these observations
to inform their project research and intentions.
Along with feedback from tutors, students explore the kiosk as a site of encounter — a threshold
between commerce and conversation, between private transaction and public gathering.
With guest Susanne Sachsse, students will draw on her experience with site-specific performance
and collaborative making, she will guide students in developing interventions that activate the
kiosk’s relationship to its community. The workshop will focus on the body in public space, on voice
as spatial practice, and on how small architectures like kiosks mediate social relations in the
context of community.
With Monica Narula and Sam Ghantous students will develop the connection to the park through
visual and structural speculations and elaborations. They will explore what an interface to the
community might mean in its analogue forms, through considering how activity and communication
condense and disperse, and how the making of a node can be made material and immaterial.
Through speculation and experimentation, ideas are translated into interventions or prototypes that
can be tested in the public setting.
The workshop culminates in an activation at Edicola Periodico 11:11, where students install and
present their interventions. By engaging directly with people who use the kiosk, students observe
how their work functions in real conditions and document responses for later reflection. The
experience will close at the IED where presentations about the experience and intentions will take
the shape of a roundtable discussion.
